The Almanac of the Dead - comments and video

What is your reaction to Leslie Marmon Silko's critique of European culture in The Almanac of the Dead.

Please watch this short video made by a group of students. Is this clip useful in reading Silko's controversial book?

  1. Her critique is sometimes random without anything following to support her claim. One instance being the following quote:

"Didn't they know where Karl Marx got his notions of egalitarian communism? "From here," La Escapia had said, "Marx stole his ideas from us, the Native Americans." (311)

The statement makes sense towards the groups that are hunter-gatherers and the spread of wealth would follow, but no reason to state "stole" specifically from the Native Americans as if no hunter-gatherers ever existed in Europe. Also Jesus had the same views of spreading the wealth and removing inequalities, so Marx is quite the thief.
