This is Robert Neuwirth, author of Shadow Cities, another book that deals with the topic of global poverty and migration. I also recommend to you Mike Davis's Planet of Slums.

  1. Yes, Neuwirth's Shadow Cities is about poverty and migration, but the book does not promote the same message as that of What is the What. The purpose of Shadow Cities is to eliminate our preconceptions about poverty, and what it means to live a good life. In his global adventure into the many squatter cities of the world, Neuwirth meets more than just people struggling with poverty. There are community events, businesspeople, real estate and assorted ambitions not unlike any other metropolitan area. Being a Westerner, it's easy to see the differences in what we deem civilized and the conditions in which those from poorer nations feel comfortable living; but that's only because we associate material wealth with success, and often fail to appreciate the importance of "minor" luxuries like food and shelter.
